Speaking in West Virginia today, President Bush says that "he's using his last six months in office to push new energy plans that include electricity from coal." [1]

According to the Associated Press, Bush said "there is no more reliable source of electricity than coal." He also said that promoting a variety of energy sources will be part of the "sprint to the finish" he plans for his presidency.

Unfortunately coal is also a very reliable source, in fact the largest source, of human-produced mercury emissions. [2]

Its also a very reliable source of greenhouse gas. [3]

With all the health and environmental problems related to coal wouldn't it make more sense for Bush to sprint towards long-term renewable energy sources [4] like wind, solar and geothermal technology?

That would be a legacy he'd be remembered for. But this presidency has never had much to do with what makes sense.
