Direct action is definitely getting the goods on coal in Australia.
In the past weeks, our mates down under have been busy. They shut down 3 coal plants (Brisbane, Perth and Sydney) and now the biggest coal port in the world (Newcastle).
Coal is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the world and the Australian climate movement is taking their nation's contributions to it very seriously.
Yesterday, over 1,200 Australians used people power to blockade the trains heading into Newcastle's coal port. A diverse, spirited, defiant mix of people including families, coal workers and activists put their bodies into the gears of the machine to stop over 20,000 tons of coal from getting to the port.
According to activist reports, many people made it on to the rail line - through or under the fence - and coal transport in Newcastle was shut down for the entire day. Dozens chained themselves to train cars. No
coal trains got through. There were 50 arrests.
Organizers estimated that we cost the coal industry about 1.3 million in lost revenue.

This action came out of the Camp for Climate Action. There are eight climate camps happening worldwide this summer.

I guess a blockade of 1200 wasn't enough. They are not stopping

People power
The mass movement is definitely growing! Climate camp was an amazing and inspiring experience to be a part of, and gave a sense of what will come, with more and more people refusing to let governments get away with business-as-usual. Actions like these allow us to broadcast clearly our vision of a clean, renewable future and bring more and more people alongside us in the fight ot overcome the political hurdles to climate change solutions.
